And all those millions of millions of dollars are still being found today. Which brings us to today’s incredible story, as we hear from Nicolas Escobar, Pablo Escobar’s nephew, who found 18 million dollars in the walls of his home. Shut out of entertainment’s mainstream, Tyler Perry, Hollywood’s newest billionaire wrote, produced and starred in his own American success story. Mostly dismissed by the Hollywood establishment and even some other Black luminaries (Spike Lee once derided Perry’s crass slapstick approach as “coonery buffoonery” before later relenting), Perry has succeeded for two reasons: He has honed a product that too many others viewed as destined for the discount bin. And he made sure to control it all.

The 51-year-old entertainer owns the entirety of his creative output, including more than 1,200 episodes of television, 22 feature films and at least two dozen stage plays, as well as a 330-acre studio lot at the edge of Atlanta’s southern limits. He used that control to leverage a deal with ViacomCBS that pays him $150 million a year for new content and gives him an equity stake in BET+, the streaming service it debuted last September. Forbes estimates Perry has earned more than $1.4 billion in pretax income since 2005, which he used to buy homes in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as well as two planes. Quite a lifestyle for a once-homeless playwright raised in poverty in New Orleans. Today, Forbes estimates his net worth at $1 billion, with a clear path to future membership in The Forbes 400.

A natural ham, Perry grew up making his mother laugh with impersonations. He was dealing with more than poverty: He describes an upbringing by an abusive man who he later learned was not his father. He was inspired to write out the stress he was feeling after watching an episode of Oprah Winfrey’s talk show, and spent his 20s touring small theaters around the country performing the plays he wrote, produced and starred in—a crash course in what was to come.

Perry has been operating out of Atlanta since he released Diary in 2005; in the ensuing 15 years he has produced at least one feature film every year, as well as 13 more television series, nearly all of it filmed in and around the city.In the latest Portraits episode, Forbes follows Tyler Perry around his Atlanta-based lot to get a sense of what it takes to build, own and control production on a billion-dollar scale.

These companies follow a Multi-Level Marketing model, that means they often do not sell their products/services via retailers, but through a workforce of people sometimes called their “distributors”. This strategy is also often labelled as Network Marketing.

Examples of these companies are: Herbalife, Amway, ACN, Younique, LuLaRoe, Arbonne, Beachbody, doTerra, Mary Kay, Nu Skin, etc.

Although it seems ordinary on the surface, many of these companies have received a great amount of backlash, with entire communities built to oppose these companies (often labelled as the anti-mlm community).

The question here is: why the backlash?

In this video we dive into the industry and the reasoning behind the backlash, as well as the shady practices some MLM companies use in order to keep their distributors inside the company.

Some of these practices include the selling of a “dream” and promises of high returns, wealth, residual income, or “financial freedom” if they join, whilst simultaneously promoting many self-help concepts.

We also take a look at what exactly a Pyramid Scheme is, how to spot one, and whether the accusations against network marketing companies are deserved.

The pursuit of wealth and financial freedom can often be consuming – the question is who out there is choosing to exploit these desires…

It's been branded the world's biggest heist - between 2009 and 2014 at least $4.5 billion was allegedly stolen from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB.
At the center of the scandal are the former Prime Minister, Najib Razak, and the now fugitive Malaysian financier and alleged mastermind of the scam, Jho Low. Ousted from power last year, Najib now faces almost 40 criminal charges, and Jho Low is wanted in Malaysia, Singapore, and the United States. The heist allegedly began soon after a joint venture deal was signed between 1MDB and a little-known company called, PetroSaudi. Hundreds of millions were soon siphoned to a Swiss bank account controlled by Jho Low and then later, as alleged by the US Department of Justice, into Najib Razak’s personal bank accounts in Malaysia. The world may never have known any of this if it hadn’t been for a disgruntled PetroSaudi ex-employee, Xavier Justo. He leaked more than 200,000 confidential emails containing evidence of alleged criminal activity to a British journalist, Clare Rewcastle Brown.

At least half a dozen criminal investigations into the misappropriation of the billions of dollars from 1MDB are currently underway around the world and charges are being laid not only against the alleged conspirators but executives from global financial institutions. In this episode of 101 East, we investigate the deals and alleged criminal cover-ups that robbed Malaysia of billions of dollars and track down the accidental hero who blew the whistle.-

In 2012, while living in China, longtime e-waste recycler Eric Lundgren manufactured 28,000 PC restore discs to be used in refurbished computers sold in the United States.

The shipment of discs, exact copies of Dell-branded Microsoft Windows CDs, immediately raised suspicions with U.S. Customs officers, beginning a chain of events that would alter Lundgren’s life for the next seven years.

VICE follows the prolific computer refurbisher as he's sentenced to—and released from—federal prison.

Closing Universities Is Creating a Housing Crisis for Students

Megan Job is a Brooklyn native who is studying neuroscience at Middlebury College in Vermont. She used to live on campus, but had to leave after the school closed due to the coronavirus outbreak. She is uncertain where she will stay until the campus reopens because she is what housing advocates consider “housing insecure.” Throughout Megan’s life, her family has experienced homelessness or housing insecurity.

Megan says her mom, Maxine Stanford, worked full-time but struggled financially to raise two daughters in New York City. Maxine has been renting a room in Jersey City, NJ for a few years, but recently, Megan’s sister needed to move in. Megan doesn’t want to stay there more than a few days because she doesn’t want her mom to lose her housing.

According to a study by The Hope Center for College, Community and Justice, a research center focused on education and social policies, an estimated 14 percent of four-year college students are homeless and another 60 percent are considered housing insecure.

Middlebury told VICE News that a prorated room and board credit would be applied to students’ accounts when they returned. Megan doesn’t have the money to rent a room in New York City, so she is having to get creative with short-term solutions.

She is currently staying in an Airbnb in Brooklyn, which one of her former teachers was able to help her pay for. She will only be there until the end of the month. She will then possibly work as a nanny for a couple who needs childcare. In exchange, they will let her stay in their empty Airbnb. This will give her a stable place to live until she goes to Washington D.C., where she will work as a summer intern for the National Institutes of Health.
